RBC Meets the Golden Standard

RBC Centre is the largest office tower in Canada to receive LEED Gold certification for its interior construction and design

TORONTO, ON, Sep 24, 2012 – RBC is proud to announce that the interior construction of its space at RBC Centre has attained LEED® Gold certification, making it the largest LEED Commercial Interiors (CI) project in Canada.

RBC, in collaboration with The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited, utilized leading state-of-the-art design and technology to achieve LEED CI Gold certification, offering its employees one of the most advanced, environmentally conscious building interiors in Canada.

“The achievement of LEED Gold CI for our interior employee space at RBC Centre, paired with LEED Gold certification of the base building, clearly demonstrates our long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility and to providing our employees with new, cutting-edge workplace designs and a leading collaborative work environment,” said Nadeem Shabbar, Vice-President, Corporate Real Estate, RBC. “I am pleased that we can offer our employees the opportunity to work in a facility that is a leading example of environmental sustainability.”

The LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program is based on a point system and that requires a detailed evaluation of the building interior on criteria covering innovation in design, indoor environmental quality, water efficiency, sustainable materials use and energy efficiency among other categories.

"From its location to the paint on the walls, environmental factors were considered and incorporated into every decision and every detail of design and construction at RBC Centre.”

In order to obtain Gold certification, RBC’s interior space met the LEED CI criteria by offering the following features:

  • Installation and use of Energy Star® appliances only;
  • Comprehensive recycling program including the storage and collection of organics and recyclables;
  • Diversion of over 75% of interior construction waste from landfills by reusing or recycling materials;
  • Over 20% of the materials used to construct the interior space were made of recycled content;
  • 20% of construction materials were manufactured regionally within 800 km, thereby reducing emissions associated with long-haul shipping and reducing shipping expenses;
  • All construction materials (i.e. paints, carpet, sealants) were selected for their minimal environmental emissions; and
  • Ensuring all cleaning of the space is done using green products.

In accordance with LEED Green Building Rating System®, RBC Centre boasts the following green base building features:

  • Sustainable Enwave Deep Lake Cooling System provides clean, efficient cooling;
  • Power conservation through indirect lighting/lighting sensors;
  • Light shelves for natural light reflection and maximum penetration;
  • An energy efficient exposed ceiling;
  • Non-toxic materials used in construction;
  • Energy-wise operational windows on lower floors;
  • Sunshades on the podium floors;
  • Six fresh air changes per hour;
  • Fabric blinds on windows to respond to exterior light conditions; and
  • A storage facility for bicycles.
