About RBC > Community & Sustainability > Environment > Water > Responsible Water Use
There's only so much fresh water on earth, so it's up to all of us to use it wisely. That's why, in addition to donations, the RBC Blue Water Project™ supports programs and initiatives that create an understanding of the value and vulnerability of our water resources.
The RBC Blue Water Project is also involved in partnerships and events that promote responsible water use and the economic value of water, such as the Blue Economy Initiative, the Imagine H2O competition for water innovations, and the annual Canadian Water Summit. Initiatives such as these enable business, government and others to build a common understanding of the broad economic and environmental impacts of water, in an effort to create a shared agenda for water sustainability.
If you are among the many who want to help promote water awareness, we have put together a host of tools to help. For tips on responsible water use, consult one of our Trusted Resources on the Environment.
While banking is not a water-intensive business, we serve clients across all industries, all around the world. Clients who depend on water for their operations, such as mining, oil and gas and manufacturing, could face financial and operational risks if they do not have access to adequate amounts of fresh water. This is not only a risk for our clients, but could pose a threat to the economic development of a region or country. That's why the idea of a water footprint (the total amount of water an organization consumes to produce goods and services) matters to RBC and other financial services companies.
