Meet Myin
Hao Yin, oilfield engineer, newcomer to Canada.
Myin: My name is Myin Hao Yin. I'm from Daqing City, the biggest oil field in China.
Myin's family immigrated to Calgary,
the oil capital of Canada.
Myin: Population is similar, size is similar, work is similar.
But a lot of things are different.
Myin: When I was there in China I never used credit
card and even the debit card - the debits - I had to look
it up in the dictionary, "what does debit mean?"
There was also a language barrier for
Myin.
Myin: I couldn't understand, even so simple words, I couldn't understand.
Then he met Lila Wong.
Lila: I could totally relate to him 'cause when I was
a child when I came to Canada I was not able to speak a word
of English.
Myin: Right now I can speak, but that time I couldn't.
Lila made it easier for Myin.
Myin: The first time I met Lila she showed me how to use the ATM, the machine.
Lila: Here's Myin, he has no immediate family, no relatives, no friends whatsoever, so just having someone that they feel comfortable with really makes it that much easier for them.
Myin: Once we arrived here I promised my wife, I say "I buy you house." My wife, she was a little bit excited on the house.
How do you buy a house without a credit history?
Myin: My friend told me, "you have to go to bank to borrow money." Oh, that's a… that's big deal. He say, "you gotta pay the mortgage," and I say, "what is the mortgage?"
So Lila introduced him to an RBC Mortgage Specialist.
And they got their house!
Now Lila's helping Myin prepare for
his next big challenge, starting a business.
Myin: My dream actually - I want to set up company and run a company.
Lila: He's got a lot ahead of him; very promising future. When we show that we care for them it really, really makes a difference.
Myin: I love this country, I love this people here.
