The RBC Blue Water Project is
a wide-ranging, multi-year program to help foster a culture
of water stewardship in Canada and abroad, so that people
have clean fresh water today and tomorrow. Our goal is to
contribute to a future of sustainable water resources worldwide.
The first phase of the RBC Blue Water Project, announced in
late 2007, is a grant program of $50 million over ten years
to support charitable initiatives that foster a culture of
water stewardship.
Why water?
RBC has a longstanding commitment to environmental sustainability.
Water has become an integral part of that commitment, as water
is fundamental to the sustainability of all life on the planet.
In fact, lack of access to clean fresh water is considered to
be one of the major threats to human health and economic development
around the world.
The demands on this limited resource continue to grow, even
in Canada, where we have one of the world's largest supplies
of freshwater. This is an urgent global humanitarian crisis,
and it could easily become an economic crisis, in both developed
and developing nations, if industries that need fresh water
for their operations can't find it.
Other activities and initiatives
We will complement our granting program with activities and
initiatives that will include:
- Reducing the intensity of RBC's own water footprint;
- Embarking on education and awareness programs for employees
and clients to promote sustainable water use and create
an understanding of the value and vulnerability of our water
resources;
- Increasing our ability to provide financial services to
innovative water technology companies and water-related
services, and encouraging the growth of this business sector;
- Sponsoring events and activities related to education,
awareness and collaboration in the cause of water stewardship;
- Taking a leadership role to encourage the involvement
of other corporations and encouraging a spirit of collaboration
among and between all sectors.
