Making a Difference at Work

Your Workplace and the Environment

You may be surprised to learn that buildings account for 30 to 40 percent of global energy use, making the workplace an area where every step taken by management and staff to improve environmental performance will make a big difference. Even when businesses are tenants, they can substantially reduce their environmental impact, and save money, through activities ranging from using recycled materials and low-emitting paints to controlling their light systems and heating and cooling. There's also a great deal that employees can do to make a difference in their individual work spaces.

Making a Difference at Work

Creating a work environment that's comfortable, productive and environmentally sound can be rewarding and easier than you might think.

In your workspace: It only takes a few small steps to reduce the carbon-footprint of your own workspace. Turn your computer monitor, lights and other equipment off when they're not needed or you're on break. Consider how you can reduce the materials it takes to do your job well, either by using less paper or choosing products with less packaging. Recycle as many used materials from your workspace as possible.

As a workplace: By ensuring conservation is part of your work culture you can reduce your impact on the environment. Suggest an eco-recognition program for your company, organization or team that rewards environmental initiatives. Anything that informs and inspires your colleagues will make a difference to the environment and make your workplace healthier.

As a company or organization: Adopting sustainable business practices on a company-wide basis can provide a healthy return on investment. Your industry may already have existing environmental standards you can adopt, or you can institute your own changes that will both reduce energy costs and make the work environment healthier and more comfortable for employees. Small changes including instituting expanded temperature controls, using non-toxic cleaners and using more efficient lighting, vehicles and equipment, can deliver cost-effective and immediate results.
